Polls Show Growing Discontent with Trump as Approval Ratings Slide

Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with President Donald Trump's leadership, with new polls revealing significant cracks even among his traditional base of support. According to a fresh survey, only 39% of Americans approve of Trump's overall handling of the presidency, and 42% believe he is focusing on the wrong priorities.

Approval ratings on key issues such as foreign policy, trade negotiations, and the economy also hovered around a low 40%. In contrast to the strong economic ratings Trump once enjoyed, the latest New York Times/Siena College poll found that only 43% now approve of his economic stewardship — a sharp decline from 64% approval recorded in April 2024.

Independent voters, a crucial bloc for any presidential candidate, have grown especially disenchanted. The Times/Siena poll reported that just 29% of independents approve of Trump’s job performance. Moreover, over half of the voters surveyed believe that Trump is "exceeding the powers available to him," with 59% describing his second term as "scary."

Traditionally strong Republican scores on economic matters have not been enough to shield Trump from a growing perception of overreach and misplaced priorities, suggesting an uphill battle for the president as he seeks to shore up support ahead of future challenges.
