Bangladesh is in the final stages of preparation to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the universal folk festival that marks the beginning of the Bangla New Year 1432. Across the country, from bustling cities to quiet villages, the spirit of renewal and joy is palpable as people prepare to embrace the day with traditional fervor and cultural pride.

The festival, deeply rooted in Bengali heritage, is celebrated as a symbol of hope, peace, and prosperity. Streets are being adorned with vibrant decorations, while cultural organisations gear up for elaborate programmes featuring music, dance, and art that highlight the richness of Bengali traditions.

The day’s celebrations will begin with the rendering of the national anthem and the iconic song “Eso He Baishakh”, inviting the New Year with open arms and spirited hearts.

The highlight of the festivities, the Ananda Shobhajatra (Mongol Shobhajatra), is scheduled for 9:00 am. Organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, this year’s procession carries deep symbolism and resilience. Among the artistic floats are two striking representations — the “Face of Fascism” and the “Pigeon of Peace” — both of which were vandalised and set ablaze by an unidentified youth on April 12. Undeterred, students and organisers have reconstructed the floats, determined to carry forward the message of peace and resistance through art.

Security measures have been heightened across the capital and major cities to ensure peaceful celebrations. Citizens are encouraged to participate in the festivities with respect and unity, as Pahela Baishakh continues to stand as a celebration of culture, freedom, and collective hope.
